4-21-2011:  The IB Panel woofer is turning out to be a more difficult project than expected.  Suspending the panel isn't easy!  I've moved that project info here.

The gray above the chair rail is very neutral and very flat.  It's from Ralph Lauren and called, "River Rock".  The texture helps it to diffract light and it's much less reflective than the original puke pink that was on the walls previously.  The ceiling is flat black, not River Rock unfortunately but it's flat enough and there is very little reflection from the ceiling.  The original gray ceiling reflected light all over the place.  Below the chair rail I just put a very dark blue also very flat but again not River Rock.  Still it has no reflection problems at all.  This renovation has improved picture quality due to the significant reduction in tinted stray light.  Click on the thumbnails below for larger images.

You can see where the original sconces lights were on the wall between the columns.  The original locations were not going to work because they wouldn't be centered.  Because this area will now be covered by 24" h x 48" w QRD panels I'm not going to worry about patching the holes.  In fact I will still use the wiring to power some sort of lights on top of the QRD's.  This should provide a nice diffracted light reflecting off the ceiling from the top of the QRD.

There is still some touch up to do on the paint.  It's much easier to see in these photos than it is when you are standing in the room so I'll need to use photos to check for missed spots.  Lot's of them can be seen in the above photos.  Definitely more paint touch up work to be done than I thought.

Once all these renovations are complete I'll be starting the construction of a "Sub-subwoofer", an infinite baffle system mounted in the attic that will utilize conventional conical drivers as motors to drive large rigid foam panels possibly approaching the equivalent surface area of more than one hundred 15" woofers.  (nothing is finalized in the design yet)  It will open into the room through manifolds in the ceiling.  The goal is to crossover from the existing dipole subwoofers around 16 Hz and take the response down to about 7 ~ 8 Hz.  Not much use for music but it should make certain movie scenes a unique experience.

More to come...

7/11/09:  Especially now that the curtains are up I think the maroon paint is just the wrong shade.  At least it looks a little more true to life in this photo because I set the white balance using the screen as the white reference.  Anyway I never did like it from the start so I'm thinking I might take some of the curtain material to the paint store and get something to match.   Btw, the curtains are made of football jersey material.  It's very light and it's perforated so it's perfect for this.  I have some black material on order that I will use to make a curtain to go over the screen and in front of the center speaker.  Once that's done I still have a few acoustic panels to put on the walls and then just trimming out the equipment rack and this project will finally be done.   I may also put another piece of the burgundy material against the wall to cover up that small gap you see on each side.

The Plan:

The room is 19' x 27' with a 10' ceiling.  It is surrounded on three sides and on top by very large attic spaces making it easy for routing cables etc.  The first seating row is raised 6" and each row after is raised 11".  The seats are Berkline 13174 electric recliners from Ultimate Home Entertainment.  If you are looking for theatre seats talk to Roman at Ultimate Home Entertainment, he will take care of you!  These seats are amazingly comfortable!
