Surround speakers
The side surrounds are now built into the decorative columns. I'm using all Dayton Reference drivers, the 7", the 2" dome, and the 1" Reference tweeters. While these are very simple conventional 3-way design speakers, they are good enough for surround. I really don't consider the surrounds to be all that critical. As long as they are decent, although conventional, it's good enough. I just don't see the need to build something like a CBT line array just for surrounds.

The new plan on surrounds is to keep it simple. I bought some of the pre-fab 0.25 ft^3 boxes from Parts Express and I'm just going to build some simple two way speakers using the Reference 6" like the ones in the lines and the Reference tweeter. I may upgrade these later but for now it will give me an easy way to get surrounds up and running. Actually at the moment I'm in Albuquerque, NM and will be here for several weeks but the next time I have any time at home I hope to get the surrounds and also the center speaker up and playing.
1/27/09: While surround speakers are very important, I've never considered them to be as critical as the rest of the speaker systems in the theatre. Still, they should at least be of reasonable quality. I've drawn up a number of ideas but haven't started building anything yet. At one point I was calling this an, "All dipole theatre" but I'm now considering both monopole and bi-pole for the surrounds. It will just be more convenient.
